With the Disney/Fox deal coming to an end all the properties that were once off limits become free for Disney to touch. During an interview with Variety’s Playback Podcast with Kris Tapley, Marvel Studio Head Kevin Feige mentioned they could start developing as early as next year.
Feige went on to say, “We’ve been told it’s looking very good and could happen in the first six months of next year.” He was honest with the timeline stating that they haven’t started moving on those properties currently. “In terms of actually thinking about it and actually planning things, we haven’t started that yet,” he told Tapley.
It will be interesting to see what they will do with X-Men now that they own 20th Century Fox. With properties like Spider Man, they wanted to create a brand new version of the character that they could call their own while still letting Sony hold the rights. To do that with X-Men they would have to recast the entire team and maybe even reset things to completely erase the original series. That would mean that actors like Hugh Jackman and James McAvoy wouldn’t be able to reprise their roles even if they wanted. Lately Keanu Reeves has been reported saying that he would like to pick up the character Wolverine, but that is all up to what happens next.
Fantastic Four would be one that I would think could be more easily improved upon, seeing as they never got a good movie despite three attempts over the past 13 years. The last try in 2016 was an ambitious trainwreck that tried to turn the bright and colorful team into a gritty body horror movie that still managed to be dull as hell. Being part of the MCU would allow them to return to their retro future roots and would definitely be more faithful to their legacy.
The oddest thing I think would be to have a Marvel/Disney Deadpool movie. How would they play that off? Tone it down for the kids? Maybe a PG cartoon with some crude humor and slapstick comedy? Really anything could happen.
