Sony Pictures has confirmed the fifth installment of the “Insidious” franchise will be called “Insidious: The Red Door.” The first two films were directed by James Wan (“The Conjuring”) and written by Leigh Whannell (“The Invisible Man”). They centered around the Lambert family, and their terrifying struggles with a supernatural realm known as “The Further.” The next two installments are prequels, mostly revolving around demonologist Elise Rainier, played by Lin Shaye. Both films are also written by Whannell, who even made their directorial debut with the third movie.

“Insidious: The Red Door,” is written by Scott Teems (“Halloween Kills”), based on a story by Whannell. With Patrick Wilson making his directorial debut, but he is hardly a stranger to the franchise. Since he played Josh Lambert in the first two films. Wilson will be reprising his role along with other returning cast members. Including Ty Simpkins as Dalton Lambert and Rose Byrne as Renai Lambert.

The fifth film will follow the Lamberts ten years after the events of the last film. The story will revolve around Josh (Wilson) heading east to drop off his son Dalton (Simpkins) at an idyllic, ivy-covered university. However, Dalton’s college dream soon becomes a nightmare, when the repressed demons of his past return to haunt them both.

“I’m honored and thrilled to be at the helm of the next Insidious installment, which will provide an amazing chance to unpack everything the Lamberts went through a decade ago, as well as deal with the consequences of their choices,” Wilson said in a statement in 2020. “Directing the movie is both professionally and personally a full circle moment for me, and I am extremely grateful to be entrusted in continuing to tell this frightening and haunting story. Into the further we go…”

“Insidious: The Red Door,” will hit theaters on July 7th, 2023. We’ll keep you posted on updates about this project as they develop.
