“Game Of Thrones” Writer Bryan Cogman Heading “Zorro” Series

Bryan Cogman (“Game of Thrones”) has been confirmed as writer, showrunner, and executive producer for Disney+’s upcoming “Zorro” series. [While “Zorro” is just the current working title, we’ll be using it for simplicity’s sake.] The project already has Wilmer Valderrama (“That ‘70s Show”) attached to star and executive produce.

Disney+’s “Zorro” series will follow the privileged caballero Diego De La Vega, after he returns to his hometown of El Pueblo de Los Angeles following a family tragedy. During his stay, he discovers a culture of corruption and injustice that drives him to take up the mantle of the masked vigilante, Zorro, “America’s first true superhero.”

The new show is described by the studio as a bold reimagining of Disney’s classic “Zorro” series for a modern audience. Though it doesn’t sound like they will be taking the recently well-worn “gritty reboot” approach. This will be an epic adventure rooted in California’s rich and fascinating history. The show will be bursting with humor, sinister intrigue, romantic entanglements, and swashbuckling thrills. Well, it certainly sounds like “Zorro” to us!

Gary Marsh and John Gertz are also set to executive produce alongside Valderrama and Cogman. Cogman worked on HBO’s fantasy epic “Game of Thrones” for all 8 seasons. He served as co-executive producer as well as writer on 11 episodes, work that garnered him four Emmy Awards, a Hugo Award, a Producer’s Guild of America Award, and 7 Writer’s Guild Award nominations. So he clearly understands how to do the kind of action-packed swordplay that the franchise is known for.

Recently, he worked as a consulting producer for season 1 of Prime Video’s “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.” Cogman also penned the screenplay for Disney’s upcoming “The Sword in the Stone” live-action remake.

We’ll keep you updated on news about “Zorro” series as it develops.
