What is old becomes new again. After the successful re-launch of the “Scream” franchise in 2022, “I Know What You Did Last Summer” will be getting the same legacy treatment.Jennifer Kaytin Robinson will be directing the next installment of the late 90s/early 2000s meta horror franchise.

The original film follows a group of four friends who hold a dark secret that comes back to haunt them. This time, in the form of a killer with a hook-hand stalking them in a small seaside town. The murderer being, an obvious play on an old urban legend. The film spawned 2 sequels and a now-defunct show on Amazon Prime.

The original “I Know What You Did Last Summer” starred Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillippe. Only Hewitt and Prinze returned for the second film, and both are in talks to reprise their roles for this new film. Neal H. Moritz is also in talks to return as producer. Leah McKendrick will pen the script.

Sony was reportedly “blown away” by the idea McKendrick and Robinson pitched last fall. The timing couldn’t be better considering “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is often compared to the “Scream” franchise. (Given they came out around the same time and how similar the two films are in tone and style.) We are also sure the recent success of Robinson’s film for Netflix, “Do Revenge,” didn’t hurt either. Considering the movie is a throwback to late 90s teen films like “Cruel Intentions,” the style is well within her wheelhouse.

Though plot details are still unknown at this time.  It is assumed this will also be a passing of the torch-style film which are growing increasingly popular in the genre. Many fans have grown to hate the constant barrage of reboots that simply throw new characters into old situations. Legacy films transition the plots a bit more, old school fans get to see their past heroes. All while introducing new characters that are more relatable to modern audiences. We can’t say what the future of this current trend will be but for now, it seems to be working.

We will keep you posted on news about the new “I Know What You Did Last Summer” film as it develops.
