While Kurt Wimmer’s (“Ultraviolet”) remake of “Children of the Corn” was one of the first films shot during the early days of the pandemic in 2020, the project has been radio silent in terms of news for the past few years. But yesterday it was announced the movie had been acquired RLJE Films and horror streaming service Shudder. It also has a 2023 release date.

The first film adaptation of Stephen King’s short story of the same name came in 1984. Since then the horror series had sequels and remakes coming at a fairly consistent pace. The last entry into the franchise came in 2018 with John Gulager’s “Children of the Corn: Runaway.” While Wimmer’s “Children of the Corn” will have very little to do with King’s story, it will be the 11th entry into the franchise.

“Children of the Corn” will follow a 12-year-old girl living in Nebraska when she becomes possessed by a spirit in a dying cornfield. This causes her to recruit other children in her small town to go on a bloody rampage and kill all the adults and anyone else who opposes her. The town’s only hope of survival is a bright high schooler who won’t go along with the plan.

“We’re thrilled to work with Kurt Wimmer and bring his vision of this classic Stephen King story to new audiences,” said Mark Ward, Chief Acquisitions Officer of RLJE Films.

The film stars Elena Kampouris (“Before I Fall”), Kate Moyer (“Station Eleven”), Callan Mulvey (“The Gray Man”), and Bruce Spence (“The Road Warrior”). “Children of the Corn” is executive produced by Digital Domain, who will also provide the digital visual effects. It is produced by Lucas Foster (“Morbius”), Doug Barry (“FML”), and John Baldecchi (“Point Break”).

“Children of the Corn”  will hit theaters for a limited time 18-day run on March 3. It will then move to on-demand and digital on March 21. Check out a trailer for the 1984 adaptation below:
