Hugh Jackman on Returning as Wolverine for “Deadpool 3”

Earlier this year, it was announced Hugh Jackman would return to the role of Wolverine, alongside Ryan Reynolds in “Deadpool 3.” This is a big deal, as both characters will officially be joining Marvel Studios with this film. But this teamup announcement also left fans perplexed as to how on earth Logan could even return.

While Jackman clearly enjoyed his time as the brooding hero, he was also pretty clear he would not return to the role. The ending of 2017’s “Logan” also didn’t really leave the possibility for him to come back.

There’s a pretty simple explanation for how Wolverine and Deadpool can team up. Jackman shared the info with “Logan” director James Mangold. “He was actually really cool about it,” Jackman said. “I did tell him that it took place before our movie, so it wasn’t going to screw it up, like claws coming out of the grave. So, he was relieved by that, and he totally got it, that it was a really good idea.”

Keeping continuity in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), especially now, is a herculean task for all involved. “None of us wanted to screw with that and I was really proud of the movie and what we did, and it felt like perfect and actually for five years, I was really honest that I can tell you, I was like, this is it,” Jackman added. “It was August 14, I remember driving and it just came to me like, that this would be so much fun. I’ll probably have more fun on that movie than anything and on August 13 I was like, I’m never playing that part again.” So, it seems like Jackman is just as surprised at this development as everyone else.

“Deadpool 3” is really the perfect place to bring in his version of Wolverine. This absolutely could be the nexus point between 20th Century Fox’s Marvel IPs and the larger Disney-owned MCU. Plus, Deadpool is known for constantly mocking the comic-book legend. While plot details are still unknown, Jackman did also explain the relationship the two characters will have.

“How do I categorize it? Ten being really close, zero being the reality, we’re zero, we’re opposites, hate each other,” he said. “I’m just talking from my perspective, [Logan’s] frustrated by him, wants to be a million miles away from him or wants to punch him in the head. Unfortunately, he can’t be a million miles away from him in this movie, so I’m probably going to punch him in the head a lot.”
