Fantasy Classic “Dragonslayer” FINALLY Getting Official 4K Release

Paramount is finally releasing a 4K remaster of Matthew Robbins’ dark fantasy film “Dragonslayer.” Initially released in 1981, the film tells the story young wizarding apprentice (Peter MacNicol) who is sent to kill a dragon that has been devouring girls from a nearby kingdom. It was a massive cult hit, that hasn’t seen a physical media release since DVD. The fan demand for this film is so great, Amazon still has VHS listed for almost $10 a piece.*

“Dragonslayer” will be receiving both a 4K Ultra HD disc (and Blu-ray) as well as a limited 4K Blu-ray steelbook edition. The film was restored for picture and sound with Dolby Atmos sound, HDR-10, and Dolby Vision. This edition is also approved by writer/director Robbins.

    Special features:

    • NEW Commentary by Director Matthew Robbins & Guillermo del Toro
    • NEW Screen Tests
    • NEW The Slayer of All Dragons
    • Original Theatrical Trailer

While Guillermo del Toro did not have a hand in creating “Dragonslayer” he is a very vocal fan of the film. He and Robbins have even worked together in the past on “Mimic,” “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark,” “Crimson Peak,” and most recently del Toro’s “Pinocchio.”

The only downside to this edition of  “Dragonslayer” is its February 21st, 2023 release date means it won’t be out in time for most holidays. But if you absolutely cannot wait for a physical release it is also available to buy digitally on Amazon Prime. It just won’t be in 4K with all the bell and whistles.

*Writer’s note: as a dead media collector I’d advise you never to buy VHS from a source who cannot provide an image of the tape itself to prove it doesn’t have mold aka “VHS cancer.”
