Warner Bros. Won’t Give Ice Cube Rights to “Friday” Films

Earlier this year, Ice Cube revealed he had written two more entries for the “Friday” movie franchise. Warner Bros. Pictures apparently rejected both scripts. The rapper recently revealed he wants full creative control over the series, which currently consists of three films- “Friday” (1995), “Next Friday” (2000), and “Friday After Next” (2002).

“I don’t know. Warner Brothers is weird right now,” Cube said when asked about an upcoming fourth installment, “Last Friday.” “I don’t know what they’re doing. They don’t know what they’re doing. We’d love to have it back. I think it’s going be close to a time when we get it back. So, we’ll either wait for that time, or we’ll keep trying to convince them that they need to let us control the movie. It’s my movie, but they have distribution control.”

Ice Cube wrote and starred in all three films for New Line Cinema. Warner Bros. Pictures now owns New Line, so they can’t move forward on a new movie without the studio’s approval. When asked why he doesn’t just buy the rights from WB, Cube responded in a pretty Cube way.

“I ain’t putting shit up for it. Fuck no. They need to give it to me, and they’re going to make money,” he said. “I’m not about to pay for my own stuff, that’s stupid. They need to do the right thing, get it to us, let us turn it into more money, and make the fans happy…We can do a lot with it.”

Another hurdle for a new “Friday” movie is Ice Cube currently needs to work outside of the current Hollywood Covid-19 compliance system for productions. Making a film like this is a hard task even with his talents and resources. But in November, Cube confirmed he lost out on a $9 million role because he refused to get vaccinated.  “I turned down a movie because I didn’t want to get the motherfucking jab,” Cube said. “I turned down $9 million. I didn’t want get the jab. Fuck that jab. Fuck ya’ll for trying to make me get it. I don’t know how Hollywood feels about me right now.”

[Editor’s note: Don’t be like Cube. Please get vaccinated and boosted.]

Stay tuned to Nerdbot for updates on a new “Friday” film if/when they develop.
