Elon Musk Wants to Charge for Twitter Verified Checkmarks

As we know, Elon Musk has completed his purchase of social media platform, Twitter. One of the biggest proposed changes the new CEO is toying with is a monthly subscription for those with verified checkmarks. Several celebrities- you know, the main users of the checkmarks- have already been considering leaving the site. Especially after the use of racial slurs rose over 500% mere hours after Musk took over. Then, there was Musks’ now-deleted conspiracy tweet regarding Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi‘s husband, Paul Pelolsi, who was attacked in a home invasion last week.

The whole verification process is being revamped right now

But the big thing this morning is this subscription service. A proposed $20 monthly fee, for users to continue to display the checkmark (generally meaning this is indeed the official account of the person/place/thing), could help the company turn a profit. But, if the team currently working on this change doesn’t meet deadlines placed by Musk, they’ll be fired.

$20 a month to keep my blue check? Fuck that, they should pay me. If that gets instituted, I’m gone like Enron.

Some Twitter users pointed out someone like Stephen King “could afford it.” His response? “It ain’t the money, it’s the principal of the thing.”

We’ll let you know what we hear about this idea being implemented.

Mary Anne Butler (Mab) has been part of the fast-paced world of journalism since she was 15, getting her start in album reviews and live concert coverage for a nationally published (print) music magazine. She eventually transitioned to online media, writing for such sites as UGO/IGN, ComicsOnline, Geek Magazine, Ace of Geeks, Aggressive Comix (where she is still Editor-in-Chief), Bleeding Cool (where she was News Editor), and now Nerdbot as Editor-In-Chief. Over the past 10 years, she’s built a reputation at conventions across the globe as a cosplayer (occasionally), photographer (constantly), panelist and moderator (mostly), and reporter (always). Interviews, reviews, observations, breaking news, and objective reporting are the name of the game for the founder of Harkonnen Knife Fight, a Dune-themed band with an international presence. Though she be but little, she is fierce.
