“Monster High: The Movie” is Getting a Sequel

After a huge release earlier this month, Nickelodeon has already green-lit a “Monster High: The Movie” sequel. Mattel first introduced Monster High in 2010 as a new line of dolls, paired with a YouTube series. The plot revolves around the children of famous monsters and mythical creatures who live in the fictional town of New Salem. Where they attend, you guessed it, Monster High. Each monster is distinctly different to show inclusivity among the characters. Learning to love yourself for who you are is a common theme, and not a bad one considering it is geared towards younger viewers.

“Monster High: The Movie”’ follows Clawdeen Wolf who is half-human and half-werewolf, as she finally finds a place to fit in. Unfortunately, a devious plan threatens to reveal her true identity and destroy Monster High as we know it. She must learn to accept herself and embrace her true monster heart to save the day.

Since 2010 the franchise has had several animated movies and shows as well as plenty of new dolls. But this was their first attempt at adapting it into something live-action. Which makes sense considering that the teen characters are, by nature, visual effects heavy. This live-action version had an impressive 4 million+ viewers in its premiere weekend. And it was the number one Kids and Family Movie on Paramount+ during the week of its release.

The sequel will begin filming in Vancouver in January. As of right now it is expected to have the same cast of characters as the first film. Though this early in plot details are spotty. The screenplay is written by Matt Eddy and Billy Eddy who were co-writers for the first film. Director Todd Holland will also be returning for the follow-up film.

“We are ecstatic to tell the monstrous next chapter of this beloved franchise to our audience. Monster High’s message of embracing one’s unique self is as important as ever and we look forward to expanding the stories of these fan-favorite characters,” wrote Zack Olin and Shauna Phelan, Co-Heads of Nickelodeon.

Stay tuned to Nerdbot for developments on the new “Monster High” live-action movie as they become available. Check out a trailer for the first film below:
