“Arkham Asylum” Show Gets New Showrunner Antonio Campos

Warner Bros. Pictures has officially announced Antonio Campos, creator of “The Staircase,” will be the new showrunner for the Arkham Asylum series for HBO Max. Campos will also serve as head writer and director.

The show will be a spinoff of Matt Reeves‘ highly praised “The Batman,” and has already gone through a series of re-conceptions. Originally, the show was meant to be produced alongside another series about the inner workings of the Gotham City police department, with Terence Winter writing and executive producing. But after Winter and his later replacement, “Giri/Haji” creator Joe Barton, both clashed with Warner Bros. over creative difference, the GCPD series was pushed back, and Reeves spun his more Arkham-focused ideas into a separate show.

While the Arkham Asylum show does not have an official logline at this time, Reeves previously described it as “like a horror movie or a haunted house that is Arkham.” Reeves will be executive producing under his 6th & Idaho banner along with the company’s Daniel Pipski and Adam Kassan. Dylan Clark will also executive produce with 6th & Idaho’s Rafi Crohn co-executive producing.

“The Staircase” miniseries focused on the ongoing trial surrounding the death of Kathleen Peterson. Those familiar with the series know Campos is a talented writer, director, executive producer, and showrunner, capable of producing the kind of dark, tense moments fans would expect out of a series focused on Gotham’s most notorious prison. He also directed “Marvel’s The Punisher” “Cold Steel” episode, so we know he can tackle the comic book genre, too.

We’ll keep you updated about this show as news comes in.
