“The West Wing,” “Veep” Casts Join Together for Democratic Fundraiser

Mid-term elections are coming up, which you probably already know from the constant stream of social media posts and news articles. Many Hollywood actors are known for taking an interest in politics and throwing their celebrity and clout behind causes and fundraisers. Sometimes it can be a bit much, other times it can lead to unique experiences that you wouldn’t be able to see again if you tried. We’d like to thinks this upcoming event will fall into the latter category considering it involves the casts of both “The West Wing” and “Veep.”

    Julia Lous-Dreyfus – Veep – Warner Bros/HBO

The genesis of this fundraising event comes from former “West Wing” star, Bradley Whitford. Whitford is a Wisconsin native and has been invested in local politics for decades. Knowing that the mid-terms are going to be a tight race, and wanting to further the chances of Democrats, Whitford helped get the ball rolling that would eventually gather up a majority of the main cast from two full shows. Joining him arefellow co-stars Martin Sheen, Allison Janney, Richard Schiff, Mary McCormack, Janel Moloney, and Melissa Fitzgerald.

From the “Veep” side, joining the fundraiser will be Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Anna Chlumsky, Tony Hale, Gary Cole, and Tim Simmons.

Fans of “The West Wing” should not be shocked about this coming together, considering that the fictional Bartlet administration that was the focus of the show, was a Democratic administration. Given creator Aaron Sorkin‘s outspoken views, it’s a natural fit that this team would be involved in this kind of fundraiser. “Veep” on the other hand, being a much less serious program about a presidential administration would seemingly clash with the theme, but as they say, politics makes strange bedfellows.

WEST WING REUNION Dulé Hill, Bradley Whitford, Janel Moloney, Aaron Sorkin, Allison Janney, Joshua Malina, Richard Schiff, Marlee Matlin, Rob Lowe and Mary McCormack photographed exclusively for EW by Art Streiber on July 24th and 25th in Los Angeles, CA.

As for what to expect, the live event will include games played amongst the casts and likely some kind of comedic frivolity. There is no minimum donation requirement to watch the stream (assuming you can’t donate less than a dollar) and upon donation you’ll receive an email with a link to the live-stream event.

Both of these programs and casts had their own strengths, “The West Wing” being one of the finest written shows ever to air. Seeing a vast majority of that cast alone would be worthwhile, which is why they did a special reunion in 2020. “Veep” has only been off the air for three years, so while the nostalgia is not quite as prevalent, it’ll still be nice to see the cast interacting again. And if there are any competitions between the two administrations, we’re betting on Bartlet.

The start time for the livestream is set for 8pm (EST) on October 9th and is only being livestreamed once, according to the official donation website.
