About a week ago, images of office chairs shaped like coffins took Twitter by storm as the perfect statement piece for your… dead-end job. Just imagine the visual impact of sitting in a literal coffin on a zoom call or at your desk would have. It is a level of petty that most of us will only dream of.

Unfortunately, these are just concept designs by a London based former industrial designer who goes by the name Chairbox Design on the design community Behance. The project is pointedly named “The Last Shift Office Chair.” And while it certainly has a dramatic flair to it, the creator points out it also has a pragmatic function. “Once the employee dies at work the management just needs to nail the lid and roll them into a corporate cemetery. Simple yet efficient,” is the only thing written in the description for the design listing.

This begs a few questions, will this come with a special lid to allow for it to be nailed on while still sitting upright? Or is the chair able to recline to allow for a traditional coffin lid to be put on? Most are hoping it would recline since that would open the door for some serious napping opportunities. The fact that there are handles for pallbearers also makes it seem like it should recline. You can even customize your color and finish to get the coffin of your dreams.

The only real complaint about the design is the backing looks stiff and uncomfortable. Most associate coffins with having a thick and plushy lining. While these look like the vinyl you’d see on a sofa in a common area at a community college. No one wants to sit on those all day let alone nap on them.
So while the coffin office chair is the hero the working class needs right now, it’s not the one we are getting.
