New Look at Marvel’s “Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur”

We have just gotten a glimpse of the upcoming “Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur” animated show that will be premiering on Disney+. The clip, which premiered at San Diego Comic-Con, gives us a taste of the overall tone of the show, some excellent voice acting from our leads, and a clear path forward.

Definitely aimed at a younger audience, the animation is quick and colorful, with Moon Girl’s goggles emoting along with her. The clip focuses on Moon Girl (voiced by Diamond White) and her friend Casey (Libe Barer) trying to take on a pair of burglars. It’s clearly early in Moon Girl’s crime-fighting days because not only are they both terribly nervous — as anyone confronting their first bit of crime head-on would be — they’re also specifically trying to get video of Moon Girl in action to get her name out there. This in itself is a problem because, while Moon Girl has a sleek suit and plenty of neat gadgets, she doesn’t have a superhero name. The encounter is embarrassing and disastrous, and reveals the ongoing problems of not having a fully trained 10-ton T-Rex.

As we mentioned before, the show definitely is aimed at a younger audience but it manages to cram a lot into one short clip. The T-Rex is adorable, the action is engaging, and the messages are on point. In less than a minute we get two key messages that are the foundation of superhero media: “Bravery is what you do when you’re flat-out scared” and “if you don’t take yourself seriously, no one else will.” The dynamic between Moon Girl and Casey is also great, reminiscent of the chemistry that made the central friendship of Cardcaptor Sakura work so well. We look forward to seeing how that friendship develops and how Moon Girl comes into her own as hero.

Besides Diamond and Barer, the show is also slated to feature guest stars including Alison Brie, Andy Cohen, Daveed Diggs, Maya Hawke, Jennifer Hudson, Cliff Smith aka Method Man, Cobie Smulders, and Wesley Snipes. Recurring stars include Omid Abtahi, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Michael Cimino, Indya Moore, and Craig Robinson.

The Marvel Studios series hits Disney+ sometime in 2023.
