“Stranger Things” S4 Spoiled by New Monopoly Board

Apparently a new edition of Monopoly is to blame for revealing some pretty big spoilers. Netflix’ popular show “Stranger Things” is about to return for season 4, and yet someone buying Boardwalk may know how it all ends. Images from a new official Monopoly tie-in for “Stranger Things“ reportedly revealed critical plot points.

A post on Reddit (which we won’t be linking to) claims the game was bought at “a nationally recognized retailer and purchased fair and square by a consumer.” No word on which retailer it was, or other purchase details. Many fans pointed out that several stores are advertising “Stranger Things“ Monopoly games centered around previous seasons. A few eBay listings have popped up reportedly selling a season 4 version of the game.

As upset as Netflix is with the reported issue, the show’s creators Matt and Ross Duffer reportedly had a “total meltdown.” A source claims they were not consulted about this edition of game. When a show thrives on twists and secrecy, an oversight like this presents a huge problem.

Unfortunately with the wild popularity of “Stranger Things” and a constant demand for merchandise, something like this seems inevitable. According to THR, a source close to the series indicated “lessons have been learned.”

Considering this came right after the announcement that season 5 would be its last, a thirst for leaks and hints to how it will all end will only grow. This is far from the first merchandise tie-in to spoil a plot point on a major property.

(Warning: “Star Wars: Episode I- The Phantom Menace” and “Star Wars: Episode II- Attack of the Clones” spoilers contained below.)

A similar blunder happened with “The Phantom Menace.” Toy packages for Padme and Queen Amidala both had pictures of Natalie Portman on them. Which kinda gave away the twist that Padme was really Amidala in disguise.

Before “Star Wars: Episode II- Attack of the Clones” came out, fans familiar with Christopher Lee’s work had a feeling he might play a villain. A toy tie-in for the film removed all doubt. The figure model after his character, Count Dooku, had a red lightsaber. Coupled with the fact it also referred to him as a “Dark Lord,” this left no question as to which side he fell on.

“Stranger Things” season 4 vol. 1 will hit Netflix on May 27th, 2022. Volume 2 will hit July 1st.
