LimeWire, the old music sharing site that broke your parent’s computer, is coming back! Well, kind of coming back. It’s going to be an NFT selling platform that will specialize in musical NFTs, behind the stage exclusives, art, and more.
You can sign up for the waitlist on the website now, or if you are a creator, you can join a separate waitlist to collaborate with them. They’ve released a timeline of events in the graphic below.
LimeWire was a notorious platform for downloading illegal music riddled with viruses. It shut down in 2010 after a judgement against them for copyright infringement. They settled out of court for $105 million between major record labels. LimeWire now is owned and operated by new people. Two brothers from Austria, Paul and Julian Zehetmayr are now going to take the nostalgia infused brand and run the NFT marketplace.
“It’s a very iconic name. Even if you look on Twitter today, there’s hundreds of people still being nostalgic about the name. Everybody connects it with music and we’re launching initially a very music-focused marketplace, so the brand was really the perfect fit for that with its legacy.”
Julian Zehetmayr
They are expected to launch LimeWire GmbH later this spring.
