We are delighted to share the news that Harvey Guillén, best known for his role of Guillermo in “What We Do In The Shadows,” has joined Warner Bros. Pictures’ upcoming live-action super hero film “Blue Beetle!”

“Cobra Kai” star Xolo Maridueña has been tapped to play Jaime Reyes, aka Blue Beetle. Bruna Marquezine and Belissa Escobedo have also been confirmed to be joining the cast. Marquezine will play Penny, Jaime’s main squeeze and love interest. Escobedo will play Milagros, Jamie’s younger sister. No word on who Guillén is playing yet.

With a script from Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (“Miss Bala”), Angel Manuel Soto (“Charm City Kings“) will direct “Blue Beetle“ for Warner Bros. Pictures. This will mark the first feature film starring a Latino superhero, based on a comic book character.

Last we heard about “Blue Beetle” was during DC’s FanDome back in October of 2021. It included a short interview with Maridueña and Soto.

Thanks to The Wrap for first reporting these casting additions.

The film has a current release date set for August 18th, 2023. We’ll let you know what else we hear about this and other projects.

Mary Anne Butler (Mab) has been part of the fast-paced world of journalism since she was 15, getting her start in album reviews and live concert coverage for a nationally published (print) music magazine. She eventually transitioned to online media, writing for such sites as UGO/IGN, ComicsOnline, Geek Magazine, Ace of Geeks, Aggressive Comix (where she is still Editor-in-Chief), Bleeding Cool (where she was News Editor), and now Nerdbot as Editor-In-Chief. Over the past 10 years, she’s built a reputation at conventions across the globe as a cosplayer (occasionally), photographer (constantly), panelist and moderator (mostly), and reporter (always). Interviews, reviews, observations, breaking news, and objective reporting are the name of the game for the founder of Harkonnen Knife Fight, a Dune-themed band with an international presence. Though she be but little, she is fierce.
