We all know that Fox News is a cesspool of despicable people pandering misinformation and sometimes racist ideology. Fox Television has usually been able to steer clear of leading with those things, opting to focus on reality and cooking programming with the occasional fan-favorite show that gets cancelled faster than it got greenlit. But recently, it seems that the compartmentalization of entertainment and conservative pandering no longer exists, as the “The Masked Singer” recently burred that line with the grotesque casting of Rudy Giuliani.
In a yet to be aired episode, Giuliani was revealed to be a contestant, which caused both longstanding judges Ken Jeong and Robin Thicke to immediately exit in disgust and protest. It’s not necessarily the first time show has found themselves in hot water. In 2020, the show revealed controversial republican Sarah Palin was a contestant, sparking a number of pundits and celebrities to lash out at the show’s casting choices.
The casting of Giuliani is seen as a new low for the network. Though not uncommon to cast controversial figures, Giuliani is a whole different can of worms. This is a man who’s antics in the last year has put him in countless lawsuits and controversies, which includes being complicit in the Jan 6th insurrection, consistently peddling the idea that the 2020 election was ‘stolen,’ and let’s not forget the “Borat 2” scene that all but assured that Giuliani came to a meeting with an underaged girl with the worst of intentions. Also, he was banned from practicing law in New York state, a place where, you know, he served as mayor for.
The casting has been dragged through the mud on social media, with many users appalled and offended by the casting. Though he has defenders that tried to throw the moral ambiguity of Thicke and Jeong under the bus as well as trying to belittle the walk off as nothing more than a publicity stunt. The fact is, Giuliani is more than a polarizing figure. He’s directly tied to a plethora of crimes, which includes, less we forget, TREASON. Putting a man like that on a game show one year removed from the worst of it is grotesque and a major misfire for the network.
Say what you want about Thicke and Jeong, but they were right to leave the show and Rudy Giuliani should be in jail, not dressed up as a gigantic bear or whatever singing on a game show. Reality tv is a low bar already, but Fox has managed to smash through that bottom standard and should be held accountable for their horrible casting choice.
Of course, they won’t. And the new season of the “The Masked Singer” will air on March 9th.
