A PS5 controller can start behaving strangely without being completely broken. A character may move when your thumb is off the stick, a trigger may feel less responsive, or a button may occasionally fail to register.
The tricky part is figuring out whether the problem is with the controller itself, the game, or a temporary connection issue.
Before spending money on a new DualSense, there are a few simple checks worth running.
1. Check the Analog Sticks for Unwanted Movement
Stick drift is one of the easiest controller problems to notice.
Leave your character standing still in a game and take your hands off the analog sticks. If the character slowly moves, the camera turns on its own, or the menu cursor keeps moving, the stick may be registering input when it should be centered.
You can also run a PS5 controller test in your browser to check the stick inputs directly. A controller tester can show whether the analog sticks are staying near their center position or registering movement when you are not touching them.
A small amount of movement does not always mean the controller is finished. But consistent unwanted input is a good reason to investigate further.
2. Test Every Button
A button that works most of the time can be harder to spot than one that has completely stopped working.
Open a controller testing tool and press each button one at a time. Check the face buttons, D-pad, shoulder buttons, Options button, Create button, and clickable analog sticks.
Pay attention to buttons that require multiple presses before they register. A button that feels normal but occasionally misses an input can become a bigger problem during games that require quick reactions.
3. Check the Triggers
The DualSense adaptive triggers are different from traditional controller triggers, but the basic input still needs to register correctly.
Press L2 and R2 slowly and then press them all the way down. Watch for inconsistent input, sudden jumps, or a trigger that does not reach its full range.
Try both triggers several times. If one reaches a different input level from the other without a clear reason, the controller may need closer inspection.
4. Look for Connection or Input Problems
Not every controller problem is caused by worn hardware.
If your controller works normally when connected by USB but behaves differently over Bluetooth, the issue may be related to the wireless connection rather than the buttons or sticks.
Try reconnecting the controller and testing it with another game. You can also connect it to another compatible device to see if the same problem appears.
This is useful because it helps separate a controller problem from a game-specific issue.
5. Check the Analog Stick Range
A stick does more than move left and right.
Games can use the full range of analog movement, and a controller may develop problems around the edges of that range without showing obvious drift at the center.
Move each stick slowly in a circle. Then push it fully in every direction and release it.
If the input jumps, stops short, or behaves differently in one direction, make a note of it. Testing the full range can reveal problems that are easy to miss during normal gameplay.
6. Test the Controller Before Replacing It
If your DualSense is giving you trouble, replacing it immediately may not be necessary.
Run through the basic checks first. Test the sticks, buttons, triggers, and connection. Try another game and, if possible, another device.
If everything works normally during testing but one particular game continues to have problems, the controller may not be the source of the issue.
For problems that continue across different games and devices, hardware becomes a more likely explanation.
When Should You Replace a PS5 Controller?
A controller does not need to be replaced because of one strange input.
If the problem happens repeatedly, appears in multiple games, and remains after reconnecting or resetting the controller, replacement may make more sense than trying to work around the issue.
Physical damage is another clear sign that a controller may need attention. Cracked buttons, loose analog sticks, damaged ports, or liquid exposure can create problems that software troubleshooting cannot fix.
The good news is that many controller problems can be identified with a few minutes of testing. That can save you from buying a replacement for a problem that turns out to be something much simpler.
Before spending $70 or more on another controller, take a few minutes to find out what is really going wrong.
