Choosing the Right Flexible Packaging for Food and Consumer Goods

Food packaging is just as crucial as the ingredients of a consumable item. It directly impacts the freshness, aroma, and taste of the food content. Unfortunately, if food is being packed in an unreliable box or bag, this can lead to spoilage. While when the customers get the product, it may be in an unconsumable state. It’s a red flag for a business, and we don’t want it to happen in any manner. Here in this article, we’ll explore the aspects to finalize the packaging that always pays off.

Factors a Food Packaging Solution Must Have

If we list down the things that are easy to compost without any additional environmental force, it’s no doubt that food will rank at the top. That’s where its preservation gets tricky, and brands have to go one step forward to ensure they don’t pack the items in an unreliable packaging solution.

For instance, below are some of those factors that a brand should count on to double-check if their packaging is up to the mark or not.

    • Barrier Needs: First of all, food is mostly impacted by oxygen, moisture, and light. But if it doesn’t directly interact with the content, the chances of food preservation get higher than we think. Each of these aspects resists spoilage in the ideal way possible while the customer unpacks the pouch or bag, the same as if it’s just packed right away.
    • Physical Durability: The resistance to environmental factors matters a lot, but the packaging should also be tough so it is puncture-resistant and offers top-notch sealing features. That’s how even if the packaging is mishandled, the material doesn’t lose its integrity while the solid or liquid food retains its best state.
    • Supply Chain Reliability: Sometimes it’s not feasible for brands to rely on bulky premium packaging containers. Though they’re great in design, they eat a lot of space. To cope with this, options like pouches or roll stock offer the best storage optimization, which isn’t possible with tin or glass jar containers.
    • Sustainability: Aside from every factor, if your food packaging lacks sustainability, it’s time to rethink your packaging. Customers often ignore the quantity and presentation, but due to current environmental scenarios, they don’t compromise on sustainability. That’s why your brand should opt for a solution that is designed to win on eco-friendliness just like other factors.
    • Child-resistant Needs: Some food items shouldn’t be easily accessible to children. For example, food supplements meant to be kept away from toddlers for safety reasons. For such items, child resistant mylar bags for packaging are ideal.

Three Different Levels & Their Role in Food Packaging

Food packaging isn’t as simple as packing a product or item in a box. It demands multiple layers to preserve its authenticity. Below are some of the structural features a food packaging offers for your brand.

    • Primary Packaging: It’s the layer that directly touches the food without anything in between. A perfect example of it is the wholesale mylar bag packaging, which can be used to pack pickles or jam.
    • Secondary Packaging: The next comes the secondary packaging, which holds the primary units for retail. If we take our previous example for this as well, it means that the mylar pouch will be added in a plastic or cardboard box featuring a single unit.
    • Tertiary Packaging: Also known as shipping packaging, it’s used to transport the consumable food boxes to the point of sale. It includes big cartons that accommodate dozens of single-unit boxes inside and are shipped to their destination.

Top Options Available for Consumer Good Packaging

Each packaging option has its pros and cons, but for food, they offer dependability as the food-grade options don’t conflict with the content. Below are some of the material options that are always available to you if you want to finalize the food packaging.

    ●       #1: Paper Packaging

First of all, paper-crafted packaging is one of the most common options. It’s popular from fast food stalls to full-scale restaurants and beyond. These may include paper cups, fries buckets, food trays, and many similar packaging options. Brands can choose them with full confidence as these are the on-the-go solutions for all while being sustainable.

    ●       #2: Plastic Packaging

Some food products demand packaging that retains the content flexibly. For instance, the family-sized soda beverages are ideal to pack in plastic-produced bottles. These options are not only budget-friendly but also present the items decently.

    ●       #3: Glass Containers

For brands that want to showcase premium packaging design, glass containers are the ideal option to go for. Though these options are a bit delicate, they also offer a high-end appeal which isn’t possible with the rest. If you’re unsure whether your brand should go for it or not, it’s better to consult with an expert rather than relying on guesswork.

    ●       #4: Metal Cans & Containers

For food products that demand longer shelf life, nothing beats metal packaging. The thin layered plate resists moisture and light so the packed content isn’t affected due to external factors. For instance, these solutions are optimal for jams, pickles, fish products, and dried fruit items.

    The Bottom Line

All in all, we hope that you now understand the nitty-gritty of the right packaging. If you’re confused among dozens of choices, then narrow it down before you waste your energy and end up nowhere. Whatever option you finalise, ensure that it’s FDA-compliant and presents your offerings in a decent manner. That’s it!
