The box office is blowing up with original IPs that the industry would have written off a few years ago. Unfortunately, this warm embrace isn’t being felt by small-screen titles. Over the weekend, Aubrey Plaza, co-creator of the animated series Kevin, revealed that Amazon Prime did not greenlight a second season.

“Amazon Prime is not picking up Kevin for another season,” she posted to Instagram. “Very disappointing since we were just getting going. I want to say thank you to all the fans that watched our show and all of the incredible cast and crew that worked so hard to make this dream come alive… “
Kevin
The series centers around a cat caught in the middle of his owner’s breakup. Instead of dealing with their separation, he decides to leave home and move into a local pet rescue in Astoria, Queens. There, he meets a band of misfit animals who help him discover what he truly wants out of life.
Plaza voices Dana, half of the human couple that the titular character leaves. Other cast members include: Whoopi Goldberg (Harlem) as Cupcake, John Waters (Digman) as Armando, and Aparna Nancherla (Hoppers) as Judy. All three voice Kevin’s new pet store roommates. The shop is run by Gil Ozeri’s (Monster) character Seth and his dog Brandi, voiced by Amy Sedaris (The Pout-Pout Fish).
Plaza went on to reminisce about the times when television was willing to take bigger risks. “I remember on the early days of Parks & Rec when we all thought we would be cancelled because our ratings weren’t great. Our numbers. But we had some special humans over at NBC that believed in the show and let us grow and let audiences fall in love with our characters. I was hoping for this for Kevin but sadly we are living in a different time in our industry. I hope the machines won’t ruin everything. Maybe Kevin will find a new owner someday. Love you all very much. Meow,” she added.
The State of Streaming
Streamers have been slowly forgetting why people moved away from traditional cable. Originally, viewers loved streaming ad-supported content since it was often unique, raw, or just different from the endless parade of sitcoms on cable. Now, with so many services going paid-only or having exclusive paid content, the price to stream is often as much, if not more than, cable, depending on how many services you have. An expense that fewer people can justify in the current economy. Not to mention the ever-growing, homogenized offerings. While Netflix once touted Orange is the New Black, streaming is becoming the new dull as dishwater cable.
All eight episodes of Kevin hit Prime Video on April 20th. You can check out the trailer for the series below:
