Netflix Lands New Show, “Dad’s House” from “Smiling Friends” Creator

Cable television has needed some success stories lately. The industry as a whole has been hurting something fierce. One of the small victories it could claim was the Adult Swim show, Smiling Friends. The show was in its third season and renewed for two more by the network. Then, the creators abruptly announced that it was over. The third season would be the end. That hasn’t stopped co-creator Michael Cusack from finding another project though. Unfortunately for Adult Swim, it’s going to be on Netflix. The forthcoming show from Cusack is called Dad’s House.

    “Dad’s House”

The details are a little scarce at the moment but some of what we do know lines up with Cusack’s other projects. Cusack, an Australian himself, often sets his projects in his home country. Dad’s House is no exception to that. This too will be set in Australia, in the suburbs. It focuses on Sean, a 13 year old, dealing with the aftermath of his parents divorcing.

Sean now spends every other weekend with his father, Ian. Ian seems to want to be a good father to his son. However, he also seems to cause problems that make matters far more interesting than they need to be. Cusack will also be part of the voice cast. He’ll be joined by co-producers Dario Russo and David Ashby in voice roles too. Rounding out the cast is Felicity Ward.

    A Win For Netflix

Netflix hasn’t yet announced a release date for the series. Never the less, this is a big get for the streamer. Cusack also created Koala Man and YOLO, with the latter wrapping up its Adult Swim run last year after three seasons. It’ll be some consolation for Smiling Friends fans. Though there’s still the hope that the show might come back in the future, maybe Dad’s House can fill the void until then. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more in the coming weeks and months.
