The Clueless sequel series, which would have seen Alicia Silverstone reprise her role as Cher Horowitz, is no longer moving forward at Peacock. The news hit fans fast and caught many off guard.
The project was first announced as being in development at the NBCU streamer back in April 2025. Exact plot details were never revealed. It would have picked up with Cher’s life years after the events of the iconic film. Some reports suggest it would have picked up roughly 30 years after the original.
The team attached to the project was a strong one. Gossip Girl duo Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage of Fake Empire were involved. Dollface creator Jordan Weiss was set to write and executive produce. Clueless writer-director Amy Heckerling and producer Robert Lawrence were also on board as executive producers. Silverstone was set to executive produce in addition to starring.

CBS Studios was developing the project in collaboration with Universal Television. This is a division of Universal Studio Group. Universal Television is no longer involved following the change in development plans.
During the development phase, Silverstone spoke openly about her hopes for the show. In an interview with Today, as reported by ABC Audio, she said, “I think we’re going to try really hard. The goal is to make it honor what everyone loves about Clueless and Cher.” She also added, “So we want to honor that, but also bring something fresh and new to it. I’m confident that we’ll be able to do that, but we’re in baby stages right now.”
The Project isn’t Necessarily Dead
Despite Peacock walking away, the project isn’t necessarily dead. According to sources, CBS Studios and Paramount remain to have high hopes on the project and the IP. Given the passionate fanbase the film carries, it is expected to generate significant interest. It will likely do so when taken out to buyers again.
This isn’t the first time a Clueless revival has stalled at Peacock either. The streamer had previously developed a wholly separate Clueless project back in 2020. That would have focused on Cher’s best friend Dionne. But that also did not move beyond development.
The original Clueless debuted in 1995. It is loosely based on Jane Austen‘s novel Emma. It starred Silverstone alongside Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy, and Donald Faison. A TV adaptation later aired on ABC and then UPN. It ran from 1996 until 1999 for three seasons. Rachel Blanchard stepped into the role of Cher.
Peacock has not announced a new series order since May 2025. This was when Dig, from Amy Poehler and Mike Schur, was picked up. That context makes this exit feel like part of a wider pullback. It looks like a pullback on new scripted commitments at the platform.
For now, Cher Horowitz’s return to screens remains on hold. But with CBS Studios and Paramount still backing the IP, another home could come soon.
