In 2015, Dan Levy made his TV writing debut with Schitt’s Creek which he co-created with his father Eugene Levy. In a recent interview for his upcoming show Big Mistakes had him revisit the old set for the first time since the show wrapped in 2020.
When talks about a potential follow-up came up, Levy was clear it could not happen due to the sudden passing of beloved co-star Catherine O’Hara.

On Schitt’s Creek, O’Hara and Eugene Levy play Dan’s parents, alongside a fictitious sister played by Annie Murphy. Like many sitcom families, the cast soon forged a tight bond. Though the blood relations probably didn’t hurt considering Dan’s real sister, Sara Levy, also played a key role as diner owner Twyla Sands.
In walking around the old set Dan became emotional, overwhelmed by memories of O’Hara. He revealed that he did consider a follow-up series, “Yeah, I was thinking about it,” he told CBS Sunday Mornings. “It’s tough, it’s tough being back. I didn’t think that I’d have quite an emotional reaction…Just a lot of memories, a lot of memories with Catherine. It’s what you have to hold on to, is the memories of it all.”
But without his on-screen mother, insists he couldn’t do it. “No, not now,” Levy said of a potential sequel. “You can’t.”

Schitt’s Creek was a smash hit for CBC for the latter half of its 6 season run, taking a few years to build up a loyal cult following. A deal with Netflix helped push the series to a much wider audience, who immediately fell in love. Despite fan demand for a followup, Schitt’s Creek without O’Hara would just never be the same.
