Last April, Happy Death Day filmmaker Christopher Landon and star Jessica Rothe, confirmed there would be a 3rd installment. And there really hasn’t been much movement on the project, until now.
In a recent interview Rothe gave an update on the projects, admittedly slow, progress. Mostly reaffirming her commitment to finishing Tree’s story.

“The truth is, Chris Landon — our brilliant, fearless writer-director — he has the whole third one figured out,” she tells Screen Rant.
“I think, at this point, it’s just logistics. All I’ll say to you and to all the fans is, whether it’s next year or when I’m 65, pulling a Jamie Lee Curtis coming back for Halloween, I will be there to finish Tree’s story. It’s just a matter of when they get all their ducks in a row.”
The franchise kicked off in 2017 with Happy Death Day. It centers around Tree Gelbman, a completely self-absorbed college student. That is until she wakes up on her birthday to find out she is trapped in a loop of reliving her own murder. Her only chance of breaking the cycle is to identify the person who killed her.
In the 2019 sequel, Happy Death Day 2U, Tree gets trapped in a parallel universe where she must once again relive her death over and over again.
The working title for the 3rd installment is Happy Death Day to Us but nothing about the plot is known at this time. Clearly Landon wants to return to write and direct, with Rothe reprising her signature role.
We’ll keep you posted on updates about the next Happy Death Day as the project develops. Hopefully that won’t be when Rothe is in her 60s. You can watch her interview below:
