There’s another sad chapter unfolding for movie theaters. Luxury dine-in movie theater chain IPIC Theaters has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. This will be the company’s second time filing in bankruptcy court. The Florida-based chain is known for its comfortable reclining seats, in-theater dining, and experience. They say that they plan to restructure and would like some additional support which is why they decided to file. They are also hoping for court-supervised sale of the companies assets while they continue to operate – for now.
Some locations are already preparing to close as the company struggles. IPIC owns around 13 different locations in the United States. The most notable closure is expected to happen In Los Angeles County. The chain’s Westwood and Pasadena theaters are expected to shutter and will impact nearly 200 workers.
While this story is familiar it doesn’t make it any easier to report on. It’s no secret that since the pandemic theater chains have been struggling. Some before that if you consider the effect that streaming platforms have had on the industry. It’s our hope that someday these businesses will bounce back. But until then we’ll just have to watch a number of nostalgic locations fall to the wayside.
There are some people actively trying to change this however. For example Kristen Stewart purchased the historic 100-year-old Highland Theater in Highland Park, Los Angeles. She plans to restore and revive the venue. This theater was closed in 2024 and was built in 1925. She wants to reimagine it as a community centered space for films and gatherings. If everyone who cared about movies did this, theaters would remain one of the most popular locations for those who love movies once again.
