Remember That Time a First Date Turned Into a Bank Robbery?

A wise philosopher once stated that “life moves fast.” They were right. In the hectic news cycle that we all live in, stories come and go and may not stick around in our heads for too long. That’s why we wanted to take a moment to go back and revisit something that happened almost 10 years ago now. It was a different time then, but not so different that anyone would’ve accepted that a bank robbery would be a good idea for a first date.

It was early December and the holiday season was getting into full swing in Rhode Island. Tis the season to not want to be alone and a local woman decided to use a dating app to meet someone. She met Christopher Castillo, who was then 33 years old and picked him up at his parent’s house. Are there a couple of red flags here? Maybe. Sometimes men in their 30s still live at home and sometimes they may not have access to a vehicle. So, for the time being, let’s give Mr. Castillo the benefit of the doubt.

    The Bank Robbery Twist

According to reports from authorities, Castillo started drinking wine while in the car and maybe that should’ve been a sign. Combined with everything else, perhaps that would’ve been the point to fake an illness or pretend your phone is ringing. Instead, Castillo went to a local bank, the Bristol County Savings Bank to be exact, and brandished a gun. He asked the teller for a cool grand, which she gave him. Now, the robbery itself is definitely another red flag, but only asking for $1,000 when you’re already potentially throwing your life away? That’s an even bigger red flag right there.

Castillo exited the bank, got back into the car, and immediately told his date to drive away. It would seem at the time that the woman had no knowledge of what he had done but we imagine she probably had some questions when a police car started following her with the lights glaring. She pulled into a parking lot and everything started to come to light. Castillo was arrested and spat on one of the officers. The woman was fortunately not charged with anything as she didn’t seem to know what was going on and wasn’t part of the heist.

Castillo was sentenced to five years in prison for a combination of crimes. These included armed robbery and assaulting a police officer. Considering that was in 2016, he’s likely out by now. Hopefully he’s turned a new leaf but if you happen to match with him on a dating app, maybe don’t drive him to any banks.
