Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz “The Mummy 4” Gets 2028 Release Date

Last year, it was revealed Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Radio Silence) would direct a 4th installment of the 90s “The Mummy” franchise, from a script by David Coggeshall. And as we all hoped, the main stars WILL return!

    Brendan Fraser “The Mummy”

    Universal Pictures

Universal’s reboot of the classic monster film “The Mummy” hit theaters in 1999, and starred Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. The movie was a huge hit, successfully blending action, horror, and comedy in a way that felt fresh. It spawned “The Mummy Returns” in 2001 and “The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor” in 2008 (for which Weisz did not return).

Not to mention the 2002 spin-off “The Scorpion King” starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, which also spawned 2 more films. (Yeah, we could not get enough of these movies in the early 2000s).

Returning Cast for “The Mummy 4”

Both Weisz and Fraser will return as Evie and Rick O’Connell, respectively. Some sources indicate even Johnson may come back.  Fan-favorite character Ardeth Bay (Oded Fehr), the chief of the Medjai and the Pharaoh’s sacred bodyguards, is open to returning.

“I’ve heard many things from a lot of people,” Fehr said. “I have not been officially approached, but I’ve heard many things from many people. I’m assuming it’s going to happen, and I’m probably as excited as you are about it.”

“Big responsibility to try and make a movie that the fans will love as much as the first two, which are the only ones that are important, really. Yeah, I don’t know. The Mummy made me into a working actor, and I love the film. I mean, I love the franchise. I think it still holds up wonderfully, and I love the people that I got to work with. So it’d be incredible to get to do that again,” he added.

Radio Silence is known for its nostalgia-laced style, having successfully rebooted the “Scream” franchise. The duo feels confident that this will be a fitting addition to the franchise.

“Having stepped into Scream, our radar for jumping into another franchise is that it has to feel special,” Gillett tells Empire. “And [David Coggeshall’s] script really does that. It is very beautiful and sweeping and scary and fun.” That’s everything you want from a Mummy movie.

Universal currently has the filmed slated to release May 19th, 2028.
