There have been rumors swirling for the past few years that a biopic about legendary singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell was in the works. That film from Cameron Crowe (“Almost Famous“) is officially happening, and Meryl Streep (“The Devil Wears Prada“) will star in the project.
Clive Davis announced the casting during his annual pre-Grammys party at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on January 31st. When asked about Streep’s casting, Crowe confirmed Davis’ comment.

In 2025, Crowe teased some details about project on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” “We have regular meetings where I can ask her anything, and she speaks with her heart about all kinds of stuff,” Crowe explained. “It’s a movie that will be not from a distance… This is from her perspective, her life, looking out.”
He went on to describe his dear friend Mitchell as a “pack rat,” adding, “she’s kept all of her costumes, all of her clothes, all of her instruments. She’s even still the landlady of her famous house in Laurel Canyon. So this is a really personal, wonderful look at her life and music.”
Rumors that Anya Taylor-Joy will be playing a younger version of Mitchell have swirled. That casting remains speculative at this time. Amanda Seyfried had been mentioned for the role several times (she even performed hammered dulcimer).
We’ll keep you posted on updates about Crowe’s currently untitled Mitchell biopic as the project develops.
