During the previous years, the world has observed significant advancements in surveillance and inspection technology. Today’s world is filled with threats that can suddenly appear out of nowhere and hamper security. Ground Penetrating Radar Drone, also known as the GPR drone, is a drone equipped with GPR technology, which helps in high-resolution subsurface scanning. In this blog post, we are going to look at 6 different ways a GPR drone can be used to secure, inspect, and support anti-drone operations.
A GPR drone is a non-invasive solution to explore beneath the surface. In the context of security and inspections, these drones have essential roles. Not only are these GPR-equipped drones capable of covering large areas fast, but they can also access hard-to-reach areas and difficult terrains.

Now, let’s understand which 6 ways GPR drones can be utilized to elevate security, inspect underground, and support anti-drone operations.

#1 Uncovering Hidden Threats and Unlawful Activities

GPR drones are an efficient tool for security and conducting forensic investigations. These drones can use non-destructive ways to identify locally buried objects. These include objects buried like unlawful weapons, illegal pipelines, or concealed tunnels near the critical infrastructures or national border areas.

Another application of GPR drones includes identifying embedded cables and sensitive pipelines underneath the surface. In urban development scenarios, this identification beforehand prevents accidental damage and costly repairs. Furthermore, GPR drones also detect hidden structures and potential areas of contamination.

    #2 Non-Invasive Critical Infrastructure Assessment

In the field of engineering, GPR drones have a great importance in assessing critical infrastructure. It is also able to map buried structures and artifacts without damaging them.

From assessing the condition of bridge foundations, pipelines, railways, to important concrete structures, a GPR drone finds critical defects in these areas for defects and structural issues. It ensures security for the site and personnel involved in the construction or maintenance of the site.

GPR drones use electromagnetic pulses to spot underneath the surface without requiring invasive excavation. The drone has a GPS and altimeter system, which guarantees consistent collection of data while going along with the predetermined flight paths. To determine the flight paths and operate the GPR drone more efficiently, UGCS for drones is used. UGCS or Universal Ground Control Software is an effective tool for drone operators, enabling a GPR drone to execute surveillance missions.

#3 Situational Recognition for Emergency Response

One of the key benefits of the GPR drone is its quick deployment and ability to focus on emergency response. Rapid deployment of GPR drones helps in getting important intel during and after incidents. By providing a bird’s-eye view, drones give security teams the ability to monitor large or complex environments in real-time.

In case of emergencies, like natural disasters, GPR drones can be used to locate survivors in collapsed structures or landslides. It also helps to locate safe paths for first responders, such as in disaster response. GPR drones contribute to retrieving real-time data, which coordinates rescue operations effectively.

#4 Strengthening Geographical Perimeters Through Subsurface Mapping

GPR drones assist in the comprehensive mapping of underground utilities and geological formations. Furthermore, this technology analyses whether the site has potential vulnerabilities in its security.

A GPR drone has radar antennas that use electromagnetic waves to detect reverberation from the objects and structures buried underground.

    #5 Complements Anti-Drone Operations

While GPR drones are not directly involved in adding anti-drone benefits, they are able to create maps of underground utilities such as cables, pipes, and other critical infrastructure.

The technology is used to scan for buried anomalous threats, such as Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) or caches of weapons. It can still be used as an auxiliary sensor to provide depth and size information to the anti-drone devices.

    #6 Operational Efficiency

A GPR drone can scan a larger area faster because of its wider coverage. Furthermore, these drones have pre-programmed flight paths, thanks to the UGCS for drones. Unlike digging, GPR drones can test whatever is underneath the subsurface level without harming the soil.

The ultra-wideband antennas are present in the GPR devices, which help to identify objects underground. Furthermore, this technology is efficient in processing data received in the form of images. For different geolocations, optional GPS add-ons are also added in the GPR drones to correlate with the subterranean maps. It drastically reduces the survey time and also minimises labour, while offering high-resolution data.

    Wrapping Up

A Ground Penetrating Radar-enabled drone, or the GPR drone, is a non-invasive technology that utilises the radar pulses to formulate detailed 2D and 3D images of subsurface features. From detecting landmines, locating utilities and structures, to discovering buried artifacts and assessing the security of infrastructure, this device has multifaceted activities.
