In a world clouded with uncertainty, what does it mean to keep living, keep hoping, and keep creating? That’s the central question driving Before We Sail. A comic likely to be at the top of your Summer reading list. You’ll find Before We Set Sail on David Lloyd’s digital comics magazine, Aces Weekly.

Created by debut writer Carlos Yacolca and brought to life by illustrator Michelle Lino, Before We Sail isn’t just another comic. It’s a psychological study on existence in a world that has lost faith in what comes next. Told over seven chapters, this graphic novella is set to be released as part of Volume 75 of Aces Weekly, beginning July 7, 2025.

    What Is Before We Sail?

At its core, Before We Sail explores a society that no longer believes in the future. Through this lens, Yacolca and Lino examine what happens when the human spirit persists in spite of everything.

“For me, art is a superior medium of communication, and comics the greatest art of all,” “Making a first sound is a difficult task, so I thought of creating something like a three-song EP to express my ideas as a starting point, to expand on later as I improve as a writer and a person. This is planned to be the beginning of a constant communication via other works.”

    Carlos Yacolca

It’s an introspective debut for Yacolca, who uses comics as a way to start a dialogue with readers—and maybe with himself.
