HBO Renews “The Last of Us” for 3rd Season Ahead of Premiere

The post apocalyptic, fungal zombie survival tale “The Last of Us” was a huge success for HBO when it premiered in 2023. Along with Amazon’s “Fallout“ series, they proved video game adaptations can truly work in a live-action series format. “The Last of Us“ is set to premiere its second season this weekend, and HBO has just ordered a third season.

“The Last of Us” HBO Max

This is the channel that killed “Westworld” after its third season. It’s parent company held “Coyote Vs. Acme” hostage until it sold to another entertainment group. The series is a big enough success that if creators Neil Druckmann and co-creator Craig Mazin wanted a third season, they were likely going to get it.

What this third season order does is open up a lot more questions about season two. Considering that season one basically adapted the events of the first game, where is season two going to go? Is it going to adapt the entirety of the second game and let the third season expand beyond the games themselves, or will these two upcoming seasons be utilized to tell those events? We do know season 2 takes place five years after the events of season 1. And that the character of Abby from the second game will be featured in season 2, played by Kaitlyn Dever.

If you haven’t played “The Last of Us: Part 2” we’re not going to go into spoiler territory, but we will say that the story was controversial for some of the decisions it made. Color us curious, but we’re interested in seeing how or if those will play out across this season and beyond.

We’ll all find out together on April 13th when season 2 of “The Last of Us” premieres on HBO.
