Mike Flanagan’s “Carrie” Series May Have Found it’s Star

Carrie White is one killer prom date. That may not be the exact lesson to take away from Stephen King‘s iconic first novel, “Carrie,” but it remains true in every sense of the phrase. It’s an iconic story that’s a lot more than just a prom gone bad thanks to a bucket of pig’s blood and psychokinetic powers, that’s just the most iconic element of the story. Because of its themes of bullying, parental abuse, womanhood, and social acceptance, the story has been adapted to film and television three times with a fourth on the way. Now we have reports of who may be taking up the bloodied prom dress for this most recent go around.

Mike Flanagan is developing “Carrie” as an 8-episode series for Amazon Prime. He’s been working his way through a number of King properties including “Doctor Sleep” and “The Life of Chuck.” Also on the horizon is a “The Dark Tower” adaptation. What would be shocking is if this adaptation actually lives up to the original film by Brian DePalma. Or the novel itself. A lot of that depends on the performance of Carrie. Which is where Summer H. Howell comes into the picture.

Howell is currently in the running to take on the iconic role. She has appeared in a few horror films including “The Midnight Man,” “Curse of Chucky,” and “Cult of Chucky,” as well as “Hunter Hunter.” This would be her highest profile performance in terms of a project as well as the history of the part. Carrie was previously played by Sissy Spacek, Angela Bettis, and Chloë Grace Moretz across two theatrical films and one made for TV movie sandwiched between them.

Of course the other question is who is going to play Carrie’s mom? Margaret White is just as essential and pivotal to the film and was played respectively by heavy hitting actresses, Piper Laurie, Patricia Clarkson, and Julianne Moore. The chemistry between the mother and daughter is a big part of the film, and we’ll have to see who Howell will be playing off of, if she is indeed set for the role. We’ll continue to update you as we hear more about the upcoming project.
