With all the shows and films that are constantly coming out, you may have forgotten Marvel Studios has an upcoming series about Nova. If you grew up watching PBS, you may think that this is something about a science television program, but no! This Nova is about Richard Rider, the superhero member of Nova Corps that took on the titular name of that organization. It was originally announced a while ago, kind of went away for a bit, came back, then went away, and now it’s back again. Not only is it back, it’s back as a series with a showrunner!
To be fair, Nova isn’t the most well known hero in the Marvel Comics pantheon. Though the character was created back in the ’60s, he wouldn’t have a Marvel premiere and his own series until 1976. Since then, Nova has mostly popped up in collaboration with other groups, including The New Warriors and the Guardians of the Galaxy. He is a character that deserves a bit more attention than what he has received and that’s where Marvel is hoping to capitalize.
There has been quite a bit of movement behind the scenes to make this upcoming series happen. Previously, Sabir Pirzada, the writer of the “Moon Knight“ series was tapped to helm “Nova.” But now, Pirzada has been replaced by Ed Bernero as the showrunner. Bernero had previously worked on “Criminal Minds” as an executive producer and was the co-creator of “Third Watch.” Given his past work, it would seem like the show is going in a fairly serious and dramatic direction. Of course this is just assumption considering how little we still know about the series.
In the meantime, if you want to experience some Nova for yourself, one of his more high profile appearances outside of the comics is in the Marvel vs Capcom game series. Nova is playable in both Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Ultimate and Marvel vs. Capcom Infinity. It was my introduction to him and served as a springboard for investigating the character a bit further. Did you know he can fly? Well now you know. And when we know more about the upcoming series, we’ll update you on that too.
