New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Animation, and WingNut Films are giving a behind-the-scenes look at “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.” This new featurette has interviews with members of the cast and crew about the upcoming film. All while showing off the stunning hand-drawn animation behind it.

    “The War of the Rohirrim”

The new anime takes place 183 years before the events in Sir Peter Jackson‘s trilogy of films. It will tell the story of Helm Hammerhand (Brian Cox), the ancient king of Rohan. Who, alongside his daughter, Hèra (Gaia Wise), is battling against the Dunlendings.

“Even though it’s only a page and a half in the appendices, I’ve always loved the story of Helm,” producer Philippa Boyens said. “I felt it would mesh well with the great Japanese filmmaker Kenji Kamiyama.”

“When I got an offer to make an animated version of ‘Lord of The Rings,’ because I was such a huge fan of the trilogy, the first thing that came to mind was, ‘How can I possibly re-create Tolkien’s world in an animated form?’,” Kamiyama said.

“In a lot of anime emotions are heightened,” producer Jason Demarco explained. “It lends itself to the operatic nature of Tolkien’s Primal storytelling.”

    The Cast

“The War of the Rohirrim” stars Cox (“Succession”) and Wise (“A Walk in the Woods”), alongside Luke Pasqualino (“Snowpiercer”) as Wulf, Miranda Otto reprising her role as Eìowyn in“The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, and the late Sir Christopher Lee reprising his role as Saruman.

Vocal talents also include Lorraine Ashbourne (“Bridgerton”), Yazdan Qafouri (“I Came By”), Benjamin Wainwright (“World on Fire”), Laurence Ubong Williams (“Gateway”), Shaun Dooley (“The Witcher”), Michael Wildman (“Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw”), Jude Akuwudike (“Beasts of No Nation”), Bilal Hasna (“Sparks”), and Janine Duvitski (“Benidorm”).

“The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” hits theaters on December 13th, 2024. We’ll keep you posted on updates about the film as they become available. You can check out the featurette below:
