Many a child of the ’80s and ’90s will remember the incessant commercials and jingles for Goldfish crackers. “I love the fishes cuz they’re so delicious, got to go fishin’!” There were others too that are planted into the recesses of our brains, but they all stem back to childhood and how appealing the fish-shaped crackers are to kids. What do you do though when you want to take that snack and broaden the market to adults? Well, obviously, you change the name of the crackers to Chilean Sea Bass.

Yes, as of Wednesday, October 24th, the Pepperidge Farm produced, cheese flavored, fish-shaped cracker, is now Chilean Sea Bass. The new “adult-sounding name” will help inspire adults to dive into this fancier snack and embrace it for the sophisticated nomenclature. Or at least that’s what Pepperidge Farm is hoping for with their tongue planted firmly in cheek.
The name change is a temporary and playful aside that’s a fun little publicity stunt to acknowledge the broad appeal of the snack, at least according to Goldfish Vice President, Danielle Brown. Which, there’s probably something you never thought about. Who among us has ever thought about Goldfish crackers and who the vice president of them is? Would you have even thought they have vice president? Exactly. But now you know, and it’s further proof that fish is brain food.

If you want to pick up one of these limited edition bags of Chilean Sea Bass crackers, you can go to the eponymous website, ChileanSeaBassCrackers.com and hope you can grab some while they’re in stock. Inventory will be periodically replenished through to Oct. 30th, so try your short at it over the next few days before the pond is fished out. Maybe it sounds ridiculous, but these types of items tend to sell out hard and fast even when it’s just the packaging that’s different.
And let’s face it, who doesn’t love a good Chilean Sea Bass, right? The placebo effect has got to count for something on the flavor!
