Mattel is adding another new Signature Barbie to its iconic line of dolls. This time it is a special edition Día de Muertos Barbie doll, created by Mexican fashion designer Kris Goyri. It serves as a tribute to the traditional festival of remembrance.

This Barbie wears a pleated white gown with balloon sleeves, a turquoise sun necklace, matching earrings, and burgundy boots. This pure white dress is inspired by indigenous Oaxaca styles and infused with Goyri’s signature style. She is also adorned with paper-mché marigolds that symbolize the path to the afterlife.

This ensemble draws heavily from pre-Hispanic roots and traditional crafts. For example, the sash wrapped around her waist represents a typical weaving of Mexican artisans.
While Día de Muertos is often represented in American pop culture with bright and colorful skulls. This decidedly less colorful presentation of the tradition is already being praised by fans for focusing more on the story of the holiday than just the flashy optics. And who are we to argue with such gorgeous results?
