Google Trend has compiled its annual list of the most searched Halloween costumes for 2024. The Frightgeist Google Trends Data Team analyzed the top trending costumes of the year in the United States and locally across all U.S. designated market areas.
Top 25 Costumes of 2024:
25. Godzilla – In celebration of “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” this was the top searched post-credit scene in April 2024. Now it’s pooised to be a hot Halloween costume.
24. Soulja Boy – Do you remember when Gen Z and Millennials battled over the correct way to Crank That is Soulja Boy? Well apparently the feud is still on, in costume form. The song is also the most searched of all time.
23. Lydia Deetz – With “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice” being a huge box office success we aren’t surprised that Lydia is the most searched of the Deetz family. This also won’t be its only appearance on this list.
22. Peely – Google trends has noticed a huge uptick in searches for “peely skin” and “peelverine” to pull off this “Fortnight” inspired ensemble.
21. Joy – The wildly popular animated film “Inside Out” received a sequel just a few months ago. The character Joy has a sunny disposition and blue hair that makes her tailor-made for a fan-favorite Halloween getup.
20. Shadow the Hedgehog – With the release of “Sonic the Hedgehog 3”’ right around the corner there is a lot of hype surrounding the introduction of Shadow the Hedgehog. Making this a popular ensemble and launching “Is Shadow the Hedgehog evil?” into Google’s top searches.
19. Minion – These yellow henchmen from the “Despicable Me” franchise continue to be a favorite among kids and Baby Boomers alike. Over the past 5 years searches for “minion costume” are 3.5 times more than “Gru costume.”
18. Dune – According to Google Trends’ “Over the past year, the top searched “popcorn bucket” was for Dune.” So we aren’t sure if this is for costumes resembling people from the film, or people dressing as the popcorn bucket. (The staff at Nerdbot are desperately hoping it’s the latter.)
17. Gambit – While a mainstay in the Marvel comics universe the release of “Deadpool & Wolverine” has put queries for “Gambit costume” at an all-time high.
16. Delia Deetz – Another “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice” costume with the new film pushing searches for Delia Deetz to a record high in September 2024.
15. Anxiety – Searches for “orange and white striped” have reached a 15-year high. Making Anxiety from the “Inside Out” films a top trending search this year.
14. Wolverine – Everyone’s favorite reluctant hero returned this year in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” Interestingly, since 2004, Alaska is the only state that searches for “Wolverine” more than “Deadpool.”
12 and 13. Anger and Disgust – both of these “Inside Out” characters topped 2024’s searches. With “Congratulations San Francisco you’ve ruined pizza” being the top searched Anger quote of all time.
11. Chipotle burrito – Food is always a safe bet for a Halloween costume. However, New Hampshire and Alaska are the only states that look up “chipotle burrito” over “chipotle bowl” in the last five years. Or you could do both as a cute couple’s costume.
10. Lady Deadpool – The day “Deadpool & Wolverine” was released “Lady Deadpool costume” became a breakout search. Oddly, the Merc With a Mouth has seemingly enjoyed his time in the sun and isn’t on this list.
9. Sabrina Carpenter – The pop sensation has become a popular costume with “heart corset” being searched more than ever in 2024, and Carpenter being the top person searched with it.
8. Dr. Doom – While Google Trends doesn’t give a reason for this one we are betting it’s the recent announcement that Robert Downey Jr. would be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the legendary character.
7. Red – “Who is red the daughter of in descendants” had been a top searched term for “Descendants: The Rise of Red” this year. And we’re sure it’ll make a top-tier costume.
6. Envy – This is the last entry from “Inside Out,” we promise. This character made “What does envy mean” the top searched question in 2024.
5. Pomni – This character is the main protagonist of the animated web series, “The Amazing Digital Circus.” And “pomni costume” searches have reached an all-time high this year.
4. Delores – With her gorgeous dress and femme fatal vibe it’s no shock this “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice” is topping 2024’s costumes list. Google Trends reports that “fake staples” became a breakout search the day the film was released.
3. Catnap – Cat is always a classic quick, cheap, Halloween costume. So going as one of their favorite treats is the only logical next step.
2. Raygun – Olympic breakdancer turned meme is one of the biggest breakout costume ideas of the year. But we already had a feeling after seeing all the Dragon Con cosplayers this year. Users looking up “raygun costume” are also hunting for “green and yellow track suit” and “green track pants”
1. Shrunken Head Bob – This is by far the fan-favorite character from “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.” While shrunken heads are far from a new phenomenon, “Beetlejuice shrunken head” is the top searched shrunken head of all time.
