All good things must end, even when it comes to dolls on a killing spree. Syfy and USA Network have officially canceled the “Chucky” series based on the “Child’s Play” horror franchise. The announcement comes just four months after part 2 of the show’s third season aired.
“Chucky“
Series creator and executive producer Don Mancini has been vocal about wanting the series to continue. His passion sparked the fan campaign #RenewChucky to show the networks there is a demand for “Chucky” season 4. Alas, horror fans’ love of foul-mouthed killer dolls inhabited by the spirits of serial killers lost out.
“I’m heartbroken over the news that Chucky won’t be coming back for a fourth season but am so grateful for the killer three years we did have,” Mancini said. “I’d like to thank UCP/Syfy/Peacock/Eat the Cat, our awesome cast and Toronto-based crew — the best in the business — and finally, to our amazing fans, a big bloody hug. Your incredible #RenewChucky campaign really warmed Chucky’s cold heart. Chucky will return! He ALWAYS comes back.”
The cancellation is mostly due to “Chucky” being one of the last high-end UCP-produced original scripted series on the network. Given that the series was already shared between Syfy and USA to also split production costs. Now, Syfy is in the process of moving to smaller budget series to fill the channel’s original scripted content needs. So, the spendier series got the ax.
Another show that was in the same boat, “Resident Alien,” was recently shifted to USA with a serious budget cut.
We’ll keep you posted on updates about Chucky’s inevitable revival, in some form or another. Like Mancini said; “He ALWAYS comes back.” All three seasons are currently streaming on Peacock, AMC+, and Shudder.
