We have some good news for fans of Magic: The Gathering. Netflix is once again starting to develop an animated series based on the popular card game. This time around, with showrunner Terry Matalas (“Star Trek: Picard”) on board.
Developing “Magic: The Gathering”
In 2019, the streamer announced they would be making a show based on the role-playing game. At that time, Joe and Anthony Russo were attached as showrunners. The Russo brothers eventually left over “creative differences.”
Soon after their departure, Jeff Klein (“Transformers: Prime”) took over the project. Klein’s iteration had Brandon Routh (“Ick”) set to voice one of the main characters. During an interview at the Toronto International Film Festival, Routh said the show was “apparently not happening.”
Now we are learning that this statement was made about the series he was attached to, not the project overall.
As a part of Netflix’s GeekedWeek 2024, the company announced the series IS still alive, just with Matalas running the show.
At this time, very little is known about what direction Matalas wants to take the series. Both the Russo Brothers and Klein planned to focus on the game’s Planeswalkers characters, along with creating new ones. So Matalas may keep going in that direction, or give us something entirely different. Only time will tell.
We’ll keep you posted on updates about the “Magic: The Gathering” animated series as it develops.
