On September 18th, Shout! Studios announced they had hired Max Einhorn to the newly created role of senior VP of acquisitions and innovations. This position would put Einhorn in control of content acquisition strategy and expansion, with things like licensing, outright acquisitions, unscripted co-productions, creator content partnerships, and new content development opportunities.
The issue is Einhorn is also considered to be a pioneer of generative AI technology, and founded Dangerous Ideas, a consulting firm focused on AI’s impact in entertainment.
“Shout! Studios is uniquely positioned as a champion of great film and television, recognized by audiences and our industry alike. I am excited to join this innovative team at such a transformative time for media,” Einhorn said. “I look forward to leveraging my experience in content strategy and AI to help drive Shout! Studios into new frontiers.”
Will Shout! Use AI?
This quote and Einhorn’s background led to a wave of backlash among fans that Shout! was planning to use AI in its film restoration processes. Later that same day, the company issued a statement clarifying its stance on the issue.
“It has come to our attention that there is confusion surrounding an announcement regarding a new member of our acquisitions team who has experience in generative AI exploration. Shout! has no interest in using AI in creative processes such as key art design or film restoration,” Shout! posted to X (formally Twitter). “We celebrate the art of entertainment and honor that in every step of our process. We frequently collaborate closely with directors, cinematographers, and producers and our ultimate goal is to honor the original intention of these artists.”
While some doubt the company’s commitment to avoiding AI, the statement seemed to have squashed the issue with some fans.
Shout! does have a long history of commitment to preservation and artist rights. Both of which AI stands to hinder. Not to mention, a team probably wrote Shout!’s statement versus Einhorn being only one voice.
Einhorn has not commented on the matter following Shout!’s statement. You can read the company’s post below:
