Rob Reiner Says “Spinal Tap II” Arriving Spring/Summer 2025

Hello Cleveland! Director Rob Reiner has given an update on the long-awaited sequel to the 1984 mockumentary “This Is Spinal Tap.” “Spinal Tap II” should escape its pod in the spring or summer of 2025.

Like the first film, Reiner will write and direct alongside playing [fictitious] director Marty DiBergi in the film. He will be joined by the original members of Spinal Tap Christopher Guest (“Mascots”) as Nigel Tufnel, Michael McKean (“Better Call Saul”) as David St. Hubbins, and Harry Shearer (“The Simpsons”) as Derek Smalls. Along with SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher (“The Nanny”) returning as Bobbi Flekman, and Paul Shaffer (“The Bite”) as Artie Fufkin.

According to the director, the cameos will be cranked up to 11. “We got everybody together and we added a couple of surprise guests,” Reiner said.  ”We have Paul McCartney and Elton John and Garth Brooks. It’s fun.”

    Developing “Spinal Tap II”

“Spinal Tap II,” is currently wrapping up filming in New Orleans. “It’s going good,” said Reiner. “Our first screening for our family and friends will be probably in August, and then sometime in September we’ll start showing it to distributors, and we’re hoping to have it out sometime late spring or early summer of next year.”

Funnily enough, Reiner just received an Emmy nomination for the documentary “Albert Brooks: Defending My Life,” about his good friend. “It’s a total surprise,” he said. “Especially because I’ve never made a real documentary. The only one I made was a fake one – Spinal Tap. It’s so funny to get recognized in this way.”

Yeah we can see how making one of the most iconic mockumentaries could prepare you for making a real one.

We’ll keep you posted on updates on “Spinal Tap II” as they become available.
