In 2006, Eli Roth’s “Hostel” helped bring the torture porn genre to the big screen and mainstream horror audiences. It spawned two sequels, 2007’s “Part II” and 2011’s “Part III.” All three films revolve around a different group of tourists falling into a deadly game of cat and mouse against rich people paying for the privilege of shedding their blood.
After laying dormant for over a decade, the “Hostel” franchise is being revived as a tv show starring Oscar-nominated actor Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”).
The “Hostel” Series
Roth will return as an executive producer alongside Chris Briggs, and Mike Fleiss who produced all three “Hostel” films. As it stands, Roth and Briggs will be handling the script with Briggs directing.
The show is very much in the development stages with no platform attached, just yet. However, it is set to be a “modern adaptation” and an “elevated thriller.” That aims to be a “reinvention” of the films that came before it.
It is also being reported that Giamatti will star in a key role, but specific character details are still under wraps. This also isn’t Giamatt’s first time being involved with “Hostel.” During an interview from 2013, he recalled the part that never came to be.
“Eli was shooting ‘Hostel’ in Prague, and I was shooting ‘The Illusionist,’ and I met him,” he said. “We talked about me actually killing somebody in that movie, but it never panned out.”
We will keep you posted on updates about the “Hostel” TV series as they become available. The first two films are currently streaming on Starz and Plex. The third movie is available for digital rental/purchase on several platforms including Prime Video, Apple TV+, and YouTube.
