In 2006, Zack Snyder co-wrote and directed the movie “300” based on a graphic novel of the same name by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley. The novel and film are loosely based on historical events, and the 1962 film “The 300 Spartans.” Turns out, a prequel series is currently in early development at Warner Bros. Television, with Snyder involved.
The show being a prequel is about all we know about the plot at this time. Currently, there isn’t a writer or platform attached to the project. So when we say early development, we *MEAN* EARLY development. The film tells the story of Leonidas King of Sparta leading a small force of 300 elite soldiers into battle against a much larger army led by Xerxes of Persia.
Who May Be Returning
Snyder is in talks to possibly direct and executive produce the series. He would be joined by fellow “300” executive producer Deborah Snyder, under their Stone Quarry production banner, alongside Wesley Coller. Other producers on the first film including Gianni Nunnari, Mark Canton, and Bernie Goldmann are in similar talks to return.
In 2014, there was a follow-up film titled “300: Rise of an Empire,” based on Miller’s graphic novel “Xerxes.” Snyder co-wrote the screenplay but did not direct. Several original cast members returned, like Sullivan Stapleton as Themistokles, Lena Headey as Queen Gorgo, and Rodrigo Santoro as Xerxes. Given this series will be a prequel we highly doubt much, if any, of the original cast will return.
At this time representatives from Warner Bros. Television have declined to comment on the developing project.
We will keep you posted on updates about the “300” prequel series if/when they become available. The first film is currently streaming on Hulu, while the sequel is available on TNT, TBS, and TruTv.
