5 Things to Do If You’re at Fault in a Car Accident

As of 2021, there are more than 280 million vehicles on US roads. With this many cars, it’s no surprise that the rate of accidents is also high. For example, in 2019, over 12 million accidents occurred in the United States, with many factors at play. If you have been involved in an accident recently, it may have been yourself that was at fault.

Few things can derail your day like suddenly finding yourself at fault in a car accident. Your mistakes behind the wheel have now put you in a difficult legal and financial situation. Being responsible for causing an accident that injured others or damaged property brings consequences that need to be handled properly. Here are five essential steps to take if you unfortunately cause a collision.

    1. Stop Immediately and Check for Injuries

The first thing you should always do after an accident is stop right away and check on the other driver and passengers to see if medical attention is needed. Providing aid and alerting emergency services can help protect accident victims from further harm. It’s the lawful and ethical thing to do. According to 2020 statistics, around 43% of all car accidents cause injury to the driver, passengers, or both.

    1. Cooperate with Law Enforcement

Stay at the scene and wait for the police to arrive. Be cooperative as officers investigate the accident and file an official report. Supply your driver’s license, insurance information, and a statement about what happened. Admitting fault upfront shows accountability and can minimize legal problems down the road. Just stick to the basic facts, as speculating or taking blame prematurely could weaken your defense later.

    1. Exchange Contact and Insurance Info

Get the other driver’s name, contact details, and insurance information. Having this documentation ensures you can get in touch with the other party and allows your insurer to follow up. By law, drivers must share insurance and vehicle registration data at the accident scene. Don’t say you’re sorry or make statements admitting fault.

    1. Notify Your Insurance Provider

Call your insurance company as soon as possible to inform them an accident occurred. Cooperate fully with their investigation. Your policy likely requires prompt notification, and you’ll need their help handling claims. Admitting fault to your insurer right away also shows honesty. Just don’t make any written or recorded statements admitting guilt to other parties before consulting your insurer, as it could hurt your legal protections.

    1. Consult a Car Accident Attorney

Contact an experienced car accident lawyer for advice on how to proceed. If injuries or substantial property damage occurred, the other side will likely pursue an insurance claim or lawsuit against you. An attorney can help you navigate the laws and processes involved. Legal counsel is critical for understanding your rights and liabilities while developing the strongest case possible to limit financial losses. Attorney fees often come out of insurance settlements. Overall, it’s wise to have a legal professional on your side.Being at fault for a car accident can lead to criminal charges, driving restrictions, higher insurance costs and civil lawsuits if victims suffered harm. Following these five recommendations helps you responsibly handle the aftermath while positioning yourself as favorably as possible for resolving matters legally and financially. Working cooperatively with law enforcement, insurers and experienced legal counsel gives you your best chance of putting the incident behind you.
