For the first time in nearly 20 years, legendary filmmaker the Pope of Trash John Waters is back with a new project. Waters is turning his novel “Liarmouth: A Feel-Bad Romance” into a movie. With such cult classics as “Pink Flamingos,” “Cry-Baby,” and “Hairspray,” we are excited for “Liarmouth.” Especially when we know who the leading role is going to.

Aubrey Plaza (“Parks and Recreation,” “The White Lotus“) has been confirmed to star. “Liarmouth” was first announced in 2022, but was delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. Production is rumored to begin this summer. Filming will unsurprisingly take place in Waters’ home city Baltimore, Maryland. Like most of Waters’ films, Baltimore is a common setting for Waters’ stories.

“I emailed him immediately and said, ‘You better let me audition for you. I even look like the girl on the cover,” Plaza said in an interview. “I’m throwing myself at his feet. I’ll do anything to get the part. I mean anything.”

“Liarmouth” follows con artist Martha Sparkle who is described as “a suitcase thief, scammer, and master of disguise.” The description from the novel continues, “Dogs and children hate her. Her own family wants her dead. She’s smart, she’s desperate, she’s disturbed, and she’s on the run with a big chip on her shoulder. They call her Liarmouth―until one insane man makes her tell the truth.”

At this time “Liarmouth” has a completed script and the film budget is being discussed. We can’t wait to learn more regarding the cast and when to expect this film in theaters. While this may be Waters’ first film in almost 20 years, he will be featured in “Chucky” Season 3 Part 2. Part 2 is set to air on April 10th, 2024. Plaza is slated to appear in Francis Ford Coppola‘s epic “Megalopolis.”
