Back in 2023, we reported Joel and Ethan Coen would be reuniting to make their first film together since 2018’s “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.” At the time, the duo was being tight-lipped about any details, but now Ethan has given us a few breadcrumbs.
Ethan was leading a Master Class hosted by the Tromso International Film Festival in Norway last week. He was speaking alongside his “Drive Away Dolls” co-director/writer Tricia Cooke, and film critic Kaleem Aftab. During the event, Ethan confirmed the brothers already had a script written, and plan to begin shooting soon.
Despite rumors the project is a neo-noir film, it seems the duo are taking a more straightforward horror route. “It’s a pure horror film, and it gets very bloody. If you like Blood Simple, I think you’ll enjoy it,” Ethan said. Cooke added that the film is also “horribly funny.”
Bloody and funny? That certainly sounds like a Coen brothers film to us! While it seems that the duo have all their ducks in a row, there may be a delay in production starting due to previous commitments by Joel. However, it is still possible for the project to start shooting by the end of the year.
We’ll keep you posted on updates about the Coen brother’s new horror movie as they become available. Ethan’s new film “Drive-Away Dolls” is set to open in the US on February 23rd. You can check out the star-studded trailer below:
