Golden Globe nominee and musician Selena Gomez will play music legend Linda Ronstadt in an upcoming biopic. Gomez teased the announcement by posting an image of Ronstadt’s 2013 memoir “Simple Dreams” to her Instagram story. The news has since been verified by other sources, but there are no other cast announcements at this time.
While little is currently known about the new film, it is already in pre-production. Producers for the project include Ronstadt’s manager John Boylan and James Keach, who produced the 2019 documentary “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice.”
We don’t currently know what part of Ronstadt’s career the movie will focus on but there are certainly plenty of highlights. She started making waves in the late 1960s but hit her stride in the 1970s with the albums “Heart Like a Wheel” and “Simple Dreams.” Both of which gained major critical and commercial success. This led her to earn 11 Grammys, and Lifetime Achievement Awards from both the Recording Academy and the Latin Recording Academy.
Decades later she is highly regarded in rock, country, and Latin music genres for her unique and timeless music. In 2023, her song “Long, Long Time” saw a 4,900% bump in streaming because it was played on the show “The Last of Us.” However, Ronstadt announced her retirement in 2011, revealing she could no longer sing due to progressive supranuclear palsy, which was initially misdiagnosed as Parkinson’s.
While Gomez is mostly known for her acting abilities on Disney’s “Wizards of Waverly Place” and now Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building.” She is far from being a stranger to music with hits like “Lose You to Love Me” and “Love You Like a Love Song.”
We’ll keep you posted on updates about Linda Ronstadt’s biopic as they become available.
