Typically when we think of the undead being sexy we think of vampires. But Zelda Williams daughter of the late Robin Williams, is getting zombies in on the act with her feature directorial debut “Lisa Frankenstein.” Will she succeed where 2013’s “Warm Bodies” failed?

“Lisa Frankenstein,” is a horror-comedy taking place in 1989.  It is a coming of RAGE love story about a misunderstood teenager (Kathryn Newton) and her high school crush, who happens to be a handsome corpse (Cole Sprouse). After a set of playfully horrific circumstances bring him back to life, the two embark on a murderous journey to find love, happiness… and a few missing body parts along the way.

The film also stars Liza Soberano, Henry Eikenberry, Joe Chrest, and Carla Gugino.

“I know Hollywood gets a bad rep for regurgitating sequels and remakes and reboots over and over and over… and yeah, it totally does that,” Williams wrote in a now deleted social media post last June. “But it’s also finally letting me make the most bonkers, wonderful zombie script I’ve ever read, and for that, I will be forever grateful!”

And given the neon-coated veneer of the first-look images and trailer, we have to agree, this looks bonkers.

While Williams didn’t intend for “Lisa Frankenstein,” to be her directorial debut, she is thrilled that it will be. “I had three films fall apart before this because movies often do,” she wrote. “It was discouraging, to say the least. But the fact this one survived and THRIVED to be my first? A f—ing gift.”

The upcoming film is written by Diablo Cody who will also be serving as a producer alongside Mason Novick. The duo will be working with Jeffrey Lampert who is an executive producer on the film.

Cody and Novick have previously collaborated on “Tully,” “Young Adult,” “Jennifer’s Body,” and “Juno.” With “Juno,” starring Elliot Page, being Cody’s breakout hit, winning her an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. “Jennifer’s Body,” starring Megan Fox was Cody’s first foray into horror, and while it wasn’t initially well received, it is slowly building a cult following.

“Lisa Frankenstein,” will hit theaters on on February 9, 2024. Just in time for Valentine’s Day. You can check out the nostalgia-blasted official trailer below:
