Trouble for “Good Omens” Season 3: Showrunner Douglas Mackinnon Leaves

We have some good news / bad news (and kind of confusing news) about Prime Video’s “Good Omens.” The series, based on the works of the late Sir Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, is likely to get a third season. The second season left us biting our nails in worry about the relationship between our beloved Angel (Michael Sheen) and Demon (David Tennant).

While news of an actual season order hasn’t happened yet, it’s the sudden departure of director and co-showrunner Douglas Mackinnon that has us concerned.

“Good Omens” Season 2 Prime Video

Naturally, the internet went wild with questions once Mackinnon announced his time with “Good Omens” was at an end. Mackinnon’s response came from a challenge from Insta users, telling television and film pros to post themselves working while the SAG-AFTRA strike continued. Mackinnon responded with a photo of the “Good Omens” sets. Which, naturally, stirred up a frenzy of excited fans about season 3. Unfortunately, with the photo came the caption “I’m not involved with this show anymore.” S’cuse us while we…

    Well that’s…upsetting.

Rumors of course have been numerous. Everything from a simple scheduling conflict to a possible political ideology issue with Gaiman have been cited.

It’s worth noting that Mackinnon has seemingly deleted any/all of his social media accounts following this news.

The Captain is Still With the Ship

Fans went looking for answers. Bombarding co-showrunner and series creator Neil Gaiman with questions. Gaiman’s polite, but curt response was simply “Douglas has moved on to other projects.” A shame to be sure. But let’s not panic just yet. While Mackinnon will be sorely missed, Gaiman is the primary leader of this project. And perhaps Mackinnon felt that it was well in hand without his assistance. Whatever the reason, it adds a little bit of a sting to the situation. But on the whole, we’re thrilled. As for Mackinnon, we wish him well on his future projects.

We’ll let you know what we hear about an official series order. Seasons 1-2 of “Good Omens” are available to stream on Prime Video now.
